Sound recordings are protected for 50 years in Canada. As a result, early '60s recordings by the Beatles and others have fallen into the public domain. Stargrove is a record label that manufactures budget CDs and can do so at low prices because the recordings fall outside Canada's 50 year protection on master recordings and therefore are not subject to royalty payments. Stargrove Entertainment Inc. took advantage of the fact and released this collector;s edition of The Beatles - The Hits Volume 1 (limited to 2000 copies) among others which were sold exclusively at Walmart stores in Canada. However the sales came to a grinding halt when the publishers (including ABKCO, Casablanca) instructed the Canadian agency charged with such license applications to stop issuing mechanical licenses to Stargrove. Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. and Universal Music Canada Inc then teamed up in a secret campaign and put a stop to Stargrove Entertainment in Canada "taking advantage of Beatles songs entering the public domain". Meanwhile Stargrove has asked the Canadian Competition Tribunal to order a stop to the violations and to enter into an agreement on standard trade terms.
