R&B/Soul
A.k.a. Pacesetters The Lovers (8)
This Army based Soul group was relatively successful under Arvey Andrews enthusiastic management, singing in many local Bay Area clubs, and Arvey decided to take them into the studio, where they recorded their first record "Do this for me"/"Love of a girl", released on Arvey's own Vardan label. Shortly after its release, however, a phone call was received from the lawyer of an east coast group of the same name and rather than fight it out in court, they decided to change their name to...The Lovers (8). A new b-side was recorded, "Someone", and "Do this for me" was re-released on another Bay Area label called Gate, under the group's new name. The record was played extensively in San Francisco in 1964 and was successful enough to be picked up by Mercury records and released nationally on the Philips imprint, where it became an R&B hit.
