REVIEW: This release of the Stones stop in Essen on their 1973 European tour presents the middle date of the three the band played there; this concert had already appeared many times in underground records, on vinyl the most famous being The Stars in the Sky They Never Lie LP (Caution AS.TS 197 810-1) with Happy, Tumbling Dice, Dancing with Mr.D, Angie, You Can t Always Get What You Want with some fade outs, Sonic Barbecue 2LP (15717), The Jean Clarke Memorial Sonic Barbecue (TAKRL 1919) that had the same tracks as Sonic Barbecue , A German Affair (TMOQ 92 (Happy,Tumbling Dice,Angie,You Can t Always Get What You Want), Tour Over Germany 1973 2LP (TSP 300-36 ) same tracks as above plus Dancing With Mr.D. On compact Missing Links cdr (You Can t Always Get What You Want), Essen 73 cdr (rank version), The Stars in the Sky (M.Beat 141) same songs as Sonic Barbecue like Jean Clarke Memorial Sonic Barbecue (VGP 246) The Stars in the sky 2 cd (VGP ASTS 191781) that has You Can t Always Get What You Want cut, All Down The Line and Rip This Joint incomplete , The Stars in the Sky (DAC 100) with both vinyl and complete sources (Gimme Shelter,Happy,Tumbling Dice, Dancing with Mr.D, Angie,You Can t Always Get What You Want), 3 Days in Essen (Rockin Rott), More Brown Sugar White Snow cdr, Essen 73 2nd Night which was a bonus cd offered with Hamburg 73 1st show, , Essen 73 ( DP 9304(Jumping Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man), Essen 1973 Revisited released.in 2010 as cdr (For Fans Only 001). This release on vinyl presents the rank stranger version which appeared in September 2009 and the version got its name from the taper s nickname; this version is in great sound and complete. Here are the taper s original notes: Recorded from the middle of the Grugahalle with a cheap cassette-recorder, this is the complete show, the only gap occurs between You Can t Always Get What You Want and Midnight Rambler when the cassette was turned over. Transfer to digital was done by Watchit. He combined my recording with the too few tracks of excellent quality from the vinyl bootleg, the version posted here is a straight transfer of my cassette. The remastered upload was called You Will Meet A Tall Rank Stranger and presented as a Voodoo Jungle Records Master. It was thought the best thing to do was just do a straight remaster of a tape source/recording instead of doing something like a merge or a matrix which would require multiple sources , this recording is one of 2 known tape sources in circulation, one was pressed to vinyl, and there s this source (which was transferred from the tapers cassettes). This source is a very good audience recording (even though the taper says it was done on a cheap tape recorder) that sounds like it was taped fairly close to the stage, and is almost a complete recording The guitars and vocals are the most dominant in the mix, it's lacking a bit in low ends, drum fills, and venue presence. So the goals of this project were to: - Add all the things the raw recording was missing (low end, drum fills, and give the recording a sense of ambience and venue presence). - Balance the instruments as much as possible. - Bring out all of the things that might be hidden in the recording (crowd cheers, clapping, commentary, etc). - We've given the project a gentle volume boost, we hope it s loud enough for everyone here. A release of this great Stones how, housed in a luxurious packaging that helps consider this release a great one for collectors.
