Album JP 1979 on Toshiba Records label
Jazz (Fusion, Swing, Sound Art)
Recorded at Toshiba EMI Studio 28th Sep. / 11th Oct. 1978 Remixed at Toshiba EMI TD Room from 3th to 23th Oct. 1978 Cutting Lathe: Neumann VMS-80 Swingin' Steam is an apt title for this extraordinary album, first ever to capture the distinctive sounds and rhythms of real, working trains and wed them musically with conventional instruments. Here is ride-the-rails rock and pop and piston-pumpin' Jazz, even a beloved Japanese children's song about--you guessed it--trains. All brilliantly, humorously arranged for "Steam Locomotive and Orchestra". No modern man-made "machine sound" can match yesterday's fire breathing "Iron Horse" for musical virtuosity, expressing everything from a lonesome midnight melody to a boogie-on-down-the-line blues.Listen closely. It took well over 100 hours to lay down the basic "train tracks" on 24-channel master tape and blend in the co-performance of the "live" musicians. All Aboaaaaard!
