The Bystanders represent a gloriously goofy UK take on the US sunshine pop sounds of Curt Boettcher, Spanky and Our Gang, the Sunshine Company, and all the rest. The real strength of this CD is the songs, which are very strong throughout. "Have I Offended the Girl," could have been a major hit if released by the Four Seasons, and there are many more wonderful tunes you've never heard before that are just real sunshine gems. If you want to know where this band is at, just look at the covers: "98.6," "She's not the Little Girl I Once Knew," and "Cheryl's Going Home" (remember? From the Blues Project's "Projections" LP?). While the songs are first rate and the harmonies are good, the Bystanders aren't an intense bunch of driven hitmakers. But they are pure exemplars of the sunshine form, and this is an enjoyable, happy CD. The only reason I withhold five stars is the production, which is the usual Pye, UK sound, which suffers in comparison to the stupendous arrangements and production being done at the same time by the Four Seasons, Brill Building types, Mamas and Papas and others. Considering the uneveness of a lot of Pye's reissue product, this is a first rate CD by a great group.
