From dead.net: 30 DAYS OF DEAD If you've been part of the Dead.net community for the past few years, then you know we're on a mission to make a miracle every day in the month of November. This year is no different. As a token of our appreciation for making 2017 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! 01 Uncle John's Band (8:58) Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Civic Center 5/26/1977 Uncle John's Band played a huge role in some classic 1977 shows, after being absent for all of 1976 until 12/31/76. In October 1977, it would leave the repertoire again until later 1979. 02 Easy Wind (8:07) San Francisco, CA, Family Dog at the Great Highway 8/29/1969 Another Workingman's Dead song, and one of Pigpen's final collaborations with Robert Hunter. 03 Unbroken Chain (6:30) Charlotte, NC, Charlotte Coliseum 3/23/1995 This standout track from Mars Hotel was never played live by the Grateful Dead until 3/19/95, this is the 2nd of 10 versions played. 04 Feel Like A Stranger (9:12) Eugene, OR, Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon 6/23/1990 Debuted in 1980, Stranger soon found a home in the setlist as a show opening song, and would often stretch out to almost 10 minutes long. 05 China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider (12:23) Albany, NY, Knickerbocker Arena 3/24/1991 China>Rider was debuted as a combination in the Fall of 1969, but both songs had been in the repertoire for a while. 06 Brown-Eyed Women (5:13) Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Civic Center 3/26/1973 Brown-Eyed Women debuted in Summer 1971, and was a part of the repertoire, usually played in the first set, until the end of the Grateful Dead's touring career. 07 Saint Of Circumstance (7:14) Mountain View, CA, Shoreline Amphitheatre 9/18/1994 Saint Of Circumstance was played with its partner song Lost Sailor 1979-1986, after which the Dead dropped Sailor, and kept Saint in the repertoire sporadically. 08 Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo>Franklin's Tower (20:24) Des Moines, IA, Des Moines Civic Center 12/7/1981 These two tracks from the Grateful Dead Records era we joined through the early 1980s mostly during the time when the Dead weren't playing Help On The Way>Slipknot!. 09 My Brother Esau, Might As Well (9:12) Morgantown, WV, Coliseum - West Virginia University 4/10/1983 My Brother Esau was in the repertoire 1983-1987, and Might As Well was played from 1976 until the mid 1980s, and then only occasionally would it appear in the setlist. 10 Shakedown Street>Samson and Delilah (22:21) Syracuse, NY, Carrier Dome - Syracuse University 10/20/1984 From the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, this is from the tour-closing show of the excellent Fall Tour of 1984. 11 Sugaree (13:02) Burlington, VT, Patrick Gymnasium - University of Vermont 5/6/1978 Sugaree was only placed a show-opener a few times, always a very welcome surprise. This and Lake Placid 83 come to mind. 12 The Other One>Stella Blue>The Other One>Sugar Magnolia (32:23) Cincinnati, OH, Riverfront Arena 10/2/1976 From the second tour of the comeback year of 1976, the Dead played this excellent, interesting sequence, typically inventive of this tour. Please note the set-closing Sugar Magnolia is cut at the end on the master tape reel. 13 Lazy River Road (6:48) Noblesville, IN, Deer Creek Music Center 6/23/1993 Lazy River Road debuted in February 1993 along with Days Between, and was a welcome addition to (mainly) first sets, another mid-tempo Jerry song to add to the first sets. 14 Shakedown Street (12:13) Berlin, Germany, Internationales Congress Centrum 10/19/1990 "Shakedown Street" again, we hope you don't mind. We had this one and the Syracuse 84 one in mind for this for so long, we couldn't resist. This is from the first night of the two night run at the tiny ICC in Berlin. 15 Bird Song (10:42) Hartford, CT, Civic Center 3/26/1987 This "Bird Song" is a great example of the peaks that song could attain, with some of the peakiest peak versions coming in 1987. This is from my first show, and even then, at 16 years old, I knew something special was happening. 16 Let Me Sing Your Blues Away (5:20) Syracuse, NY, Onondaga County War Memorial 9/17/1973 This is the penultimate version of Keith's "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away," played six times, all in September 1973. 17 Seastones">"Playing In The Band (29:19) Paris, France, Palais des Sports 9/21/1974 Although Seastones (Phil and Ned Lagin's electronic interlude played between the first and second sets at Grateful Dead shows between June and October 1974) was usually a stand-along set, occasionally the rest of the band would join in and they would segue into Grateful Dead music, like here. 18 Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain (30:28) Rochester, NY, Holleder Stadium 9/1/1979 This lengthy "Scarlet">"Fire" comes a year-less-a-day after another huge "Scarlet">"Fire" played in a stadium, the 9/2/78 Giants Stadium version. 19 Candyman (7:06) Kansas City, MO, Kansas City Municipal Auditorium 7/7/1981 This is a rare second-set version of this Hunter-Garcia classic. 20 Picasso Moon (6:46) Mountain View, CA, Shoreline Amphitheatre 5/12/1991 "Picasso Moon" appeared on the Dead's final studio album, Built To Last, and here it is being played as a show-opener, with a very cool closing jam. 21 Truckin'>New Speedway Boogie (18:30) Landover, MD, Capital Centre 3/17/1991 With a track from each of the Dead's 1970 masterpiece albums, "Truckin'" here segues into a re-born "New Speedway Boogie," brought back the previous month in Oakland after a two decade absence. 22 Bertha (5:32) Port Chester, NY, Capitol Theater 2/18/1971 This is the first-ever live version of "Bertha" by the Grateful Dead, played on the opening night of the six night run in Port Chester. This was Mickey's last show for several years. 23 Comes A Time (6:39) New York, NY, Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden 12/4/1971 "Comes A Time" debuted in 1971, was played a bit in 1972, and then disappeared from the repertoire until 1976. 24 Terrapin Station>Jam (17:00) Greensboro, NC, Greensboro Coliseum 3/31/1989 This version of "Terrapin Station" flows into a very interesting jam before veering into "Drums." 25 Here Comes Sunshine (10:45) Washington, DC, Robert F. Kennedy Stadium 6/10/1973 This song debuted on 2/9/73 along with other Wake Of The Flood and Mars Hotel songs, but was gone after February 1974, to return at the end of 1992. 26 Help On The Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower>Jam (27:31) Charlotte, NC, Charlotte Coliseum 10/22/1989 This is from the majestic Fall Tour of 1989, during which "Help">"Slip">"Franklin's" was brought back after a four year absence. In this version, which falls a few songs into the second set, the band plays a nifty spacey/MIDI jam going into "Drums." 27 So Many Roads (6:51) Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Copps Coliseum 3/21/1992 This moving Garcia-Hunter song was played from 1992 to the last show on 7/9/95. This version is from Bruce Hornsby's final run of shows as member of the Dead. 28 Here Comes Sunshine (7:06) Albany, NY, Knickerbocker Arena 3/29/1993 In late 1992, the Grateful Dead brought back "Here Comes Sunshine," played for the first time since early 1974. It was played right through to the 1995. 29 Friend Of The Devil (3:42) San Francisco, CA, Fillmore West 6/7/1970 Originally an acoustic number recorded for American Beauty, "Friend Of The Devil" would also be played sporadically through to 1974 electrically. When it returned in 1976, it was in a slower tempo. 30 The Music Never Stopped (9:16) Philadelphia, PA, The Spectrum 5/13/1978 These 1978 versions of "The Music Never Stopped" were played to maximum power, with huge endings that indeed give the feeling of the music never stopping, which we felt was an appropriate way to end this year's 30 Days Of Dead.
