The Lawmen

Country and World
A.k.a. Mark Atnip

According to "The Denver Eye", the Lawmen were a "Taylor’s Supper Club act" and "all actual Jefferson County lawmen and clearly an entertaining act!" On the cover of their first album, "Live at Taylors", they are – from left to right in front – "Sheriffs John Ray (sic), Bo Cottrell & John Grout!" The Lawmen were fixtures at Taylor's Supper Club, located at 7000 West Colfax in Denver for many years during the late 60's through the 70's. Comprised predominantly of Bo Cottrell, John Grout and John Roy during their recording years, they were supplemented by a variety of local talent (often from the ranks of Law Enforcement) including Noel Fryberger (who appeared on their first singles on the Cartay label in 1971) as well as Eddie Johnson (of Gary and Eddie, another Taylor's Supper Club favorite) and Steve Phelps, both of whom appeared with Cottrell for occasional Lawmen performances through their final appearance in 2016. The group had a night club/comedy entertainment style that was a favorite of the Denver night club scene. (Frey, Terry: 77. Denver, the Broncos, and a Coming of Age. Taylor Trade Publishing, 2008) The Lawmen released four albums and five singles, including (We've Got A) Darn Good Country, which was a favorite of President Richard Nixon, resulting in an invitation to the White House and a private performance in the Oval Office.
