The Light Infantry was an infantry regiment of the British Army, and together with The Royal Green Jackets formed The Light Division from 1968 to 2007. The regiment was formed on 10 July 1968 as a large regiment by the amalgamation of the four remaining light infantry regiments of the Light Infantry Brigade: 1st. Battalion The Light Infantry, formerly The Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry 2nd. Battalion The Light Infantry, formerly The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 3rd. Battalion The Light Infantry, formerly The King's Shropshire Light Infantry 4th. Battalion The Light Infantry, formerly The Durham Light Infantry. (4th. Battalion disbanded 31 March 1969) Each battalion had it's own (21 person) band which continued until 1985 when they were re-organized into two larger (35 person) regimental bands called The Corunna Band and The Salamanca Band ( The Light Infantry Salamanca Band ). These continued until 1993 when the four bands of the Light Division (inc Royal Green Jackets) were merged to form The Band Of The Light Division in 1994. In February 2007 The Light Infantry battalions were amalgamated into a new large regiment called The Rifles.
