A group of young musicians, ages 9 to 15, from Raytown, Missouri. They began with three saxes, the band now have seven saxophonists, a guitarist and two percussionists. The Saxophonics play music from rock ’n’ roll to the style of the Glenn Miller era, their music has been especially arranged for them by Ted Dreher and Willie Rice. The organizer, coach and guide is the boys’ teacher, Bill Thurman. A longtime professional musician, Thurman is a multigraph printer at the Unity School of Christianity, Lee’s Summit. He played sax and clarinet with Phil Harris and Johnny Coons and other name bands. He played at Paramount Studios and 20th Century Fox and was with a band in Chicago four years. The Saxophonics have played throughout Greater Kansas City for hospitals, convalescent homes and schools.
