Hot on the heels of their triumphant shows at Nottingham Rock City and Birmingham 02 Academy, The Skuzzies took a well earned winter recess. Aside that is from an appearance on Living TV, and a plethora of press that saw drummer Nik L’e West featured in ‘Hello’ magazine alongside TV cohort, Lady Victoria Hervey (there are no wedding plans, fortunately.) Despite the anguished pleas of their fans for The Skuzzies to return to the gig circuit as they had done in previous years, the majority of 2010 was taken up with working on their self-titled debut album. Lest this all get a bit ‘Mojo’ it should be pointed out that not every moment was spent studiously sequestered in the studio, fear not. The opening scenes commenced at Peter Doherty’s country house, rehearsing and recording ‘On the Corner’ with guitarist Mik Whitnall at the controls. Much fun was had by the lads when they attempted a cross country run to the local pub that left Skuzzie front man Jerome Alexandre with mud on his boots and a stitch in his side. One has to suffer for one’s art. By the summer, indie label Easy Action (www.easyaction.co.uk) had come on board and The Skuzzies were hard at work on their 10 track platter, a mixture of crowd pleasing stalwarts ‘Dissatisfied’ ‘Hungry As A Hound’ and ‘Anthem’ rubbing shoulders with newer more emotive material such as ‘Heartache Accelerates’ and ‘Are You Sleeping?’ Then came the violins and storms, not to mention a photo session that brought the main thoroughfare of Elephant & Castle to a standstill whilst The Skuzzzies set up a table on the high street for a sedate bout of afternoon tea.
