THe Takeaways were a stage band for the ABC Corporations 'Sweet & Sour'. Liner notes for the LP "Variously described by the music press as a humble pop group for the 80s, an aggro rock outfit, and a post-tribal dance band. The Takeaways formed in Sydney mid-1983 as a four-piece with a drum machine. The band plays all original songs. First Gig: Backyard 21st, performance marred by pizza subs and asparagus fingers. Afterwards, gigged solidly round Sydney for six months, playing the Dog and Bucket Hotel, The Dweezil Room, Pymble Workers' Club etc. Replaced drum machine with near human being Johnny Black - previous bands: Big Eater, Gorged 'n' Stuffed, The Burger Boys etc. Recorded independent single 'Sweet & Sour' early 1984. The single received wide alternative airplay. The Takeaways toured Melbourne to promote single and were favourably received by the more discriminating punters. This is the band's first LP. The Takeaways have so far eluded commercial success. However, negotiations are presently underway for the band to sell their story to a prominent TV station, and really clean up.
