A.k.a. Chris Ducey
The Trio of Time (Trio of Tyme on back cover) is essentially a project recorded for Surrey Records late 1964 or early ’65, but was removed from release when the artist involved, in this case Chris Ducey (who later recorded as Chris And Craig on Capitol) who recorded an albums worth of folk material. It was discovered Ducey had a Contract with another record company at the time, due to conflict of interest, he parted ways, but with Surrey holding the master tape. It’s unknown who the 2nd voice and guitar is on this recording. Ducey may have been working with Craig Smith (6) in some manner at this time, so it may be Smith who appears with Ducey on this record, as both artists were heavily involved in the folk movement and Craig Smith was performing with the Good Time Singers until late 1964, also on Capitol Records. Aside from Chris And Craig, both Lucey and Smith were also later involved in a pop psych group Penny Arkade together, and also worked on a pilot for a ill fated TV show called “The Happeners” about a folk-rock trio, similar to the Monkees TV show formula. The concept was originally titled “Chris Ducey” Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest. If this sounds familiar to some, what happened next was, after Ducey left, Surrey scurried to find another artist to fill in this contract, with all new material, a totally different sound. Surrey had already printed up both the Front and Back cover slicks for the LP jacket so when they found Bobby Jameson, they gave him the name “Chris Lucey” (fixed the covers by hand to remove part of the D in Ducey) and kept all the song titles, which Bobby Jameson wrote entirely new themes based on the existing titles. The Chris Lucey album has gone onto be admired by many collectors and remains a cult classic. (*The image on the cover is neither Bobby Jameson or Chris Ducey, it’s Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones) At least 2 years later, on a small tax (write off) shelter label Condor Records (3) fronted by Jack Millman in Canada (with offices in Hollywood California as well) The Trio Of Time album was released in relative obscurity. It wasn’t until the 2010’s, that the connection was made to the original Chris Ducey sessions. It’s unknown how Millman obtained the master tapes from the Ducey sessions. The Chris Ducey ‘Songs Of Protest And Anti-Protest’ album was released for the first time in it’s original form, as a digital download with original artwork featured, on Amazon in May 2012. It includes all the same songs found on Trio Of Time but with the original song titles.
