The Velvet Underground
Evil Mothers (Rare Velvets)

Album 1974 on Skydog label
Rock (Art Rock, Psychedelic Rock)

"Includes unreleased live tracks and rare Lou Reed originals - Studio out-takes and live-recordings from the Velvet's rehearsals". - This record was the first bootleg of the Velvet Underground ever made. It seems that only 800 copies have been distributed for an altercation between the parties involved in the project (http://i94bar-dev.info/ints/zermati.html). There was a reissue around 1984 with different matrix numbers (EM-1-A/B) but otherwise identical to the original pressing except a stronger cover, deeper blacks of sleeve, different shade of label color and greater weight of the vinyl (about 129 g compared to about 86 g of this). - It offers both sides of the pre-VU Primitives 45 and some unreleased live tracks recorded by Brigid Polk at Max's Kansas City in 1970. However "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "I'm Waiting For The Man", "New Age" and "Sweet Jane" are actually the same as on the official Live At Max's Kansas City album. - The title refers to "Sweet Jane" lyrics: "And there's some evils mothers, well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt...". - The Lou Reed photo on back cover was shot by Nat Finkelstein and is actually picked up from The Velvet Underground & Nico liner. - Black & white "dog in airplane" drawing label. Both labels and back cover incorrectly list "Sneaky Pete" in place of "The Ostrich". - A5 is listed as "I'm Waiting For My Man" on label and "I'm Waiting For The Man" on back cover. - Label/catalog numbers are: SKYDOG LP 003 (front cover), SKYDOG LP-003 (spine), Skydog L.P.-003 (labels). [Uncredited info, sources:] - A1, A3, A5, B1, B3 : Max's Kansas City, July 26, 1970. - A2 : Max's Kansas City rehearsals, summer 1970. - A4, B2 : The Primitives 45, The Ostrich / Sneaky Pete (1964). - B4 : Max's Kansas City, August 23, 1970.
