Sleeve Notes THE FAIREY ENGINEERING WORKS BAND The_Band was formed under the title Fairey Aviation Works Band_in 1937, many of its players being employed at the Fairey Aviation Works at Heaton Chapel, Stockport. When the National Brass Band Championships were re- suscitated in 1945 (following their suspension during the war years) the Band emerged as the Champion Band of Great Britain. It achieved this distinction again in 1952/4/6 as well as in 1965. Its success in the British Open Championships has been singular. It has taken the title on thirteen occasions. including registering a hat-trick in 1961/2/3. The Band now operates under the title The Fairey Engineering Works Band and it was under this title that it won the inaugural BBC Best of Brass Finals in 1978. It has long established a reputation as a singularly popular concert attraction throughout Britain and overseas also. its tours of Belgium. Canada, Germany and Holland being given liberal raise. p With many TV appearances and well over four hundred radio broadcasts to its credit, it has been the medium of many out- standing recordings. The high order of its ensemble and solo musical projection is exemplified by the performance of the items included in this album. ‘ The Band enjoys the direction of Walter B. Hargreaves who has long been a foremost conductor, teacher, adjudicator and composer in the realm of brass bands.
