Theodoros Angelopoulos (27 April 1935 – 24 January 2012), was a Greek filmmaker, screenwriter and film producer. Angelopoulos is the most acclaimed and multi-awarded Greek film director and he is considered as one of the most influential and widely respected filmmakers worldwide. Regarding his own unique techniques and thematics became known as "The Director of History". Some of his major creations are "Reconstruction" (Anaparastasi) (1970) (Berlinale FIPRESCI–Special Mention), "The Travelling Players" (O Thiassos) (1975) (Cannes FIPRESCI (Parallel Sections), "Voyage to Cythera" (Taxidi sta Kythira) (1984) (Cannes, nominated for Palme d'Or), "The Beekeeper" (O Melissokomos) (1986) (Venice, nominated for Golden Lion), "Landscape in the Mist" (Topio stin Omichli) (1988) (Venice, awarded with Silver Lion), "The Suspended Step of the Stork" (To Meteoro Vima tou Pelargou) (1991) (Cannes, nominated for Palme d'Or), "Ulysses' Gaze" (To Vlemma tou Odyssea) (1995) (Cannes, nominated for Palme d'Or, awaded with Grand Jury Prize & International Critics' Prize), "Eternity and a Day" (Mia aioniothta kai mia mera) (1998) (Cannes, awarded with Palme d'Or & Prize of the Ecumenical Jury), "The Weeping Meadow" (To Livadi pou dakryzi) (2004) (Berlinale, nominated for Golden Bear), "The Dust of Time" (I skoni tou chronou) (2009). Angelopoulos died on Tuesday, 24 January 2012, several hours after being hit by a motorcycle while shooting his latest film "The other sea" (I Alli Thalassa) in the area of Drapetsona, near Piraeus.
