Electronic (Abstract, Ambient)
Tim Coster’s A Moment’s Ornament is music experienced in miniature. A collection of 20 short vignette style modular synthesis works – the edition gently stakes out his claim in the realm of contemporary electronics. Informed by a rich tonal base Coster – who originally hails from Auckland – creates spacious sonic motions that flutter and arc with what can only be described as ‘casual intent’. Never fastidious or overwhelming, he seeks a more understated quality to his compositions – interested in subtle variation and uneasy coalescence. Recorded at his current home in Melbourne, the work draws its title from an alternative name for Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth; (the manuscript had originally been titled "A Moment's Ornament), a reference to the Wordsworth's poem 'She was a Phantom of Delight'. It also draws heavily on Coster’s approaches to his current live performances, dwelling on the temporal nature of his output to date.
