Album AU 1996 on No Thongs label
Rock and Pop
Broughton "Tjalkuri" Mitchell's music, as heard on his self-titled debut album (released in 1996 in his native Australia, and picked up for U.S. distribution four years later), is a familiar Australian brand of rock and folk-rock that American listeners who know Midnight Oil, and even the more pop-sounding Men at Work, will recognize. Like the latter, Tjalkuri writes propulsive tunes, played with pop energy by five-piece rock band; like the former, his lyrics sometimes explore social concerns bluntly. "Petrol Is Poison" states its position in its title, for example, while "Drinking" is opposed to liquor. In addition, Tjalkuri's adenoidal voice is often reminiscent of Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett (though it also sometimes recalls the Cure's Robert Smith as well). His songs range from the near-instrumental funk workout of "Take That Bait" to "Anything New," gutbucket rock 'n' roll in the midtempo style of the Rolling Stones. Much of his subject matter is local, but his fervor may bring interest beyond the borders of his own country. ~ William Ruhlmann
