Toothpaste 2000's lower-fi take on the shiny pop structures of bands like the Primitives could very well come across as charming but unremarkable pop, which is why the "pop opera" construction of Death of the Italian Film Star is such a relief -- the amusingly dramatic structure of the record gives the band the appearance of focus so many similar groups lack entirely, and makes for a unique and loveable romp through indie-pop's most carefree territories.
