Electronic and Spoken Word (Experimental, Minimal, Field Recording)
Recordings made in the Spring 2012. Packaged in in dvd slimcase. Insert with text in English and Japanese From the backcover : The ancient Greek philosophers thought that the world is constituted of a series of grains of space and time. When I walked around Miura Peninsula in the springtime, I felt the same way - the quality of the space and the time seemed to be formed by a series of grains of sounds. Each place has its own unique character. You could label it as a particular quality of the place. The quality of the sound. Or in other words, you could label it as a fundamental character of the space. What we focus on here are the events happening in a short unit of time. I decided to present the recorded materials as a composition with the least amount of modification, mainly by replacing one unit with another. This is one of my trials to present a 'subject' as a piece of work - which can be called field recordings - that contains the accidentalness. We cannot manipulate the accidentalness. The only way for us to relate to the events is to closely observe what is happening there. Let's observe the waveform of each small event. I wil ldivide the unity into smaller units, and make a loop. When a loop is used in a longer unit, we can recognize it as a certain concrete sound. But if it is very shorter, pushing the limit of the editing software, it becomes like a simple electric sound. The higher the resolution of the recording sound is, the more intense the density of the momentary occurrence is. I made loops out of my field recordings by repeating certain parts between three and a hundred times, and inserted them into the work. Here are the factors I cast a spotlight on in each track. All these factors show the certain quality of the location.
