World and Folk
Tran Quang Hai (May 13, 1944, Linh Dông Xa, Viêt-Nam) is a Vietnamese musician and ethnomusicologist. Former student at Conservatoire national de musique in Saïgon before moving in France in 1961, Quang Hai learned Oriental music theory with his father Trân Van Khê at Centre d'études de musique orientale founded by Institut de musicologie de Paris - Université de Paris-Sorbonne. Quang Hai plays more than fifteen different instruments from Vietnam, China, India, Iran, Indonesia and Europe - including jew's harp and overtones singing. Since 1966, he has given over 2.500 concerts in fifty different countries. Since 1968, Quang Hai is working at Département d'ethnomusicologie du Musée de l'Homme (Paris, France). He was also a lecturer on Southeast Asian music at the Université de Paris X in Nanterre, France (1988-1995).
