The reed trio AVENA, which is a latin word that means REED, has been founded in the year 1972. At that moment, Jan De Maeyer, Nestor Janssens and Luc Loubry were studying at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Antwerp. Several concerts in the neighbourhood of this town resulted out of their working together. In 1976 the reed trio Avena was awarded the First prize at the International Competition For Chamber Music Ensembles in Colmar, France, settled for woodwind trios and quintets that year. From 1976 on, the activities of the reed trio got more importance because of the international character of the appearances (Western Germany, France, The Netherlands, Great Britain), the number of concerts and the recording activities for radio and television.
