Spoken Word (Speech)
The 2005 Ambassador of Conscience award ceremony was held in the National Stadium, Santiago de Chile, on Sunday 26th February 2006 when U2 and Paul McGuinness were presented with the Award by Chilean President Elect Dr. Michelle Bachelet. The location for the event was Chile's National Stadium. Chosen by U2 it was highly symbolic, as the National Stadium became a place of detention, torture, and death in September 1973. Twenty years ago, music was being used in this very stadium to cover despicable human rights abuses. 'Today, music was used as a tool of pressure for the implementation of a comprehensive human rights program,' said Sergio Laurenti, Chile's Director of Amnesty International.
