We Never Die

Album UK 2012 on 12tone C.I.C label
Jazz (Afrobeat, Contemporary Jazz)

We Never Die’ is a 4 track EP from London based quartet United Vibrations (UV). A follow up to their critically acclaimed debut album “Galaxies Not Ghettos” this record marks a new creative direction for the 12tone boys from London. Backed by radio Dj’s Giles Peterson (BBC) and Jon Kennedy (XFM) these boys are destined to shake things up with their unique brand of modern day tribal spirit music. Beginning with the ferocious, jet fuelled ‘London Bridge’ which features guest vocals from fellow south Londoner Conrad The Scoundral. A grime MC famed for his humour and witty lyrics, his verses sizzle on top of a raucous driving rhythm track, with a fierce group vocal chorus sure to move you to join in with the chanting. This is original Live, gritty, London style rap music at its best. Then it’s straight into ‘Oh What Giant Steps’, a radical, reworking of Jon Coltrane’s legendary composition Giant Steps. With words taken from a speech by the Dalai Lama, this track epitomises the eclectic, innovative sound of UV. Crazy cross rhythms punctuated with gutsy vocal proclamations give this track a distinctly afro-punk sound. Next up is ‘Don’t Be Sad’. This is where we depart into new territory. In stark contrast to the previous two tracks, this is as close to a ballad as we’re likely to get from this band. A tribute to Gill Scott Heron, it is a moving hymn that will bring solace to anyone who has lost someone close. It features a string arrangement, which lifts the sound to a euphoric crescendo and shows another, more gentle and beautiful side to UV. This song is sure to find its way into many people’s hearts. The record is rounded off by an afro-latin fusion titled ‘Little Big or Small’. This is a vibrant finish to the EP leaving the listener on a real high. This track is guaranteed to get your head nodding and your foot shaking whilst putting you in an empowered state of mind as the lyrics proclaim, “Little big or small, vital we are all.” Some music is written for entertainment, some for self-expression and some music is born out of sheer necessity. There is a real urgency to this EP and it is imbued with a genuine spirit to spread the ‘good’ energy far and wide. If you want to hear something poignant, something special: listen to ‘We Never Die’.
