Valentin Marti was born in Zurich in 1965. After leaving school, he studied saxophone with Marcus Weiss and composition with Gerald Bennett at the Zurich Music Academy. He then studied composition with Michael Jarrell at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna from 1995 to 1997. Most of Marti's works have been commissioned and have been performed throughout Europe (e.g. by the Collegium Novum Zürich, the Klangforum Wien, the Ensemble opera nova Zürich, the Austrian Art Ensemble). Today, Valentin Marti works as a composer and freelance musician (above all in contemporary music) and plays freelance in various ensembles and orchestras. He is also a teacher for saxophone and ensemble. Since 1996 he has been a member of the committee of the International Society for Contemporary Music in Zurich, of which he was also president from 2002 to 2007. His works are distributed by the Swiss Music Edition. Certain works have been published by Universal Edition in Vienna and Mieroprint in Münster.
