Rock
Velhas Virgens (Old Maidens) is an independent Brazilian rock band that has characteristic irreverent lyrics, usually with sexual and alcoholic subjects. Their gigs usually emphasize their political opinion. Coming from São Paulo, the group has fifteen released albums and gradually has gained space in the alternative brazilian scene, even without playing on the radio, or appearing on TV shows throughout its 30 year history. In 1986, "Paulão" de Carvalho who had already played in the band "Drink Beer and His Broken Glasses", which was the outline of what would become the current Velhas Virgens when he met Alexandre "Cavalo" Dias. Initially, Paulão played bass and Cavalo guitar. They called their friends Rick - to take the drums and Celso - Paulão's brother - to the vocals. Until the end of the decade of 1980 they played in several places, changing several times of drummer during those years. At the turn of the decade, vocalist Celso left the band with only the founders remaining, but soon appeared Mário Sérgio "Lips Like Sugar" to take definite command of the drums. Paulão took on the vocals, the harmonica and continued with the bass, while the newcomer Fabiano assumed the position of guitarist. With this change of formation, the band started flirting more with the blues. They recorded some demos and made several shows. The year 1993 marked the departure of Fabiano. Who took his place in the guitar was Caio "The Kid" Andrade. Their first album was recorded in 1994 and released the following year , titled "Was It Good For You ?. Already in this first work appeared a characteristic that accompanied the band since 1990: Raillery lyrics speaking basically about women, beer and rock and roll. Another brand of the group was to call consecrated artists to participate in some songs. In the premiere they got the presences of Viper's Pit Passarell, Oswaldo Vecchione from Made in Brazil, Eduardo Araújo and Marcelo Nova from Camisa de Venus. It was a debut album well accepted by the fans, with a sonority focused on classic rock and roll and blues and songs like "My Life is Rock 'n Roll" (cover of Made in Brazil), "Beer in the Vein", "Just to Eat You"," Excess of Quorum" and "From Pub To Pub through the Night ", with the participation of Marcelo Nova. That same year the dancer Cláudia Lino started to accompany the band in its shows. In 1996, the Velhas Virgens signed with the label Velas, of which the singer Ivan Lins is one of the owners. Also in 1996, the entrance of the bassist Edu Gago allowed Paulão to dedicate only to the vocals and the harmonica. Their second album "You Do not Know How Good Is Inside Here" was released in 1996. Bringing more illustrious guests like Roger from Ultraje À Rigor, who sang with Paulão the sadistic "Woman of the Devil", which also featured the presence of ex- Ultraje´s Serginho Petroni. Rita Lee, who had already written the first album presentation, also appeared in this album as a guest.
