World Music Artist Vi An is a self-taught and independent Calgary based artist with 15 plus years experience playing the Chinese zheng for the most part. Vi An has a great love towards collaborations and has worked with musicians and artists in all genres of music, dance, art and theatre. In 2006 Vi An along with musical colleagues were awarded the BETTY MITCHELL Award for "best sound design and original music" for their work with the Green Fools Theatre Company in a production of "Dancing On Water" (water puppetry show at the Glenbow Museum). The play was inspired by the secret art of Vietnamese water puppetry. Vi An has also played at raves, rock shows and busking stops, never stopping her creative life journey. Vi An has a unique improvisational style and describes herself as an intuitive improviser. "Responding to and interacting with inner and outer inspirations", creating music from emotions, imaginations, even drawing from various musical influences, to come up with original music completely in the moment, just for that moment. Her music often has a symphonic characteristic, with a full, rich and dynamic sound, leaving audiences spellbound and feeling as though they are listening to an entire orchestra. Vi An's various musical instruments include various Asian long zither instruments: Chinese 'zheng', Japanese 'koto' and Vietnamese 'dan tranh' to express Vi An's inner most emotions and responses to immediate surroundings.
