Hayden is a cousin of Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) and appeared briefly in a line-up of Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band as the clarinet player, most notably on the album Trout Mask Replica and on stage in November 1969 with the band at the Amougies Festival in Belgium [see BYG Records]. A life-long friend of The GTO's' Pamela Des Barres since high-school days, featuring in her book 'I'm with the Band' (1987). Hayden is also a modest painter. He provided the cover art for Bluejeans & Moonbeams and has had minor exhibitions in the USA. Hayden is also associated with the 1986 California movement that helped the budding Berkeley punk scene at 924 Gilmore Street [aka Alternative Music Foundation], where artists like Billie Joe Armstrong & Sweet Children metamorphosed. The track 'Mascara' on Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is a small homage to Hayden. Hayden also co-founded Alchemy Records with Mark Deutrom.
