Album CA 1974 on Radio Canada International label
Classical (Modern, Neo-Classical)
CBC Radio Transcription series recordings originally for internal broadcast use and for promotional purposes rather than commercial distribution. This composer profile, like the releases before it, was intended primarily for internal and promotional use, as a resource for international and domestic radio broadcasts. The opportunity to market recordings like this for commercial distribution began to be exploited inn 1966 with the creation of CBC Records: CBC Records The "One-colour canada" cover design and pink LP labels in evidence here was first used in 1966 and is the most common cover design observed in the Discogs catalog from 1966-1974. This release (412) is the last in the original "RCI Transcription" chronology (in evidence at Discogs) to use this cover and label design. Numerous duplicate releases (scattered across numerous CBC identities) flush up undated releases of the same catalog number, with or without the RCI- prefix, using a variety of other cover/sleeve and label designs. While it is possible some of them were used alongside the designs observed here, the majority of them can be dated with confidence as reissues because of the CBC logos they use. A chronology of these cover and label designs is being prepared for posting to the Discogs forum. What is certain with regard to the earliest possible date for THIS release is that the first composition was a CBC commission and world premiere recording for the World Saxophone Congress of 1972. So the release date cannot have been earlier. Since these design characteristics became obsolescent with the advent of the CBC Gem Logo in 1974, this release is unlikely to have been issued later. The "maple-leaf" logo in evidence here is not discussed in the following source, but is witnessed on many CBC/RCI releases from the early 1960's. The founding of CBC Records in 1966 added to the multiplicity of CBC/RCI designs already in use, and elude certainty as to their chronology, but the 1974 Gem logo provides a benchmark that cannot be mis-dated.
