Rhythm 'n' blues - soul group Formed in 1952 as The Thrillers (6) Joe Murphy (lead tenor), Charles Wright (first tenor) and three cousins Lawrence Payton (second tenor), John Raymond Dorsey (baritone), and Roquel Davis (bass, songwriter, and manager). In 1954 Payton left (to join 4 Aims who became Four Tops) as well as Charles Wright. They were replaced by tenors C.P. Spencer and Charles Lee, and they renamed themselves The Five Jets. Billy Davis was replaced by Billy Lyons and when the latter left, Walter Gaines took his place. Charles Lee was replaced by Henry Jones. In mid 1958 the changed their name to Voice Masters, adding, future Temptations member Melvin Franklin. Under the guidance of Billy Davis (2) they signed with Anna Records named after Berry Gordy's sister Anna Gordy.
