THREE SONGS These songs and my choosing of their texts are an attempt to console after a tragedy. Style and form are subject to change - intent and content remain constant with me. Spain and death are close; they know how to console one another. The "tragic sense of life' is a prime motivator of my music, in whatever ethnic niche it may belong. MEDITATIONS FOR CELLO The two Meditations for Cello were recorded on two tracks so that occasionally the lines overlap; also a delayed signal was used to give the sound mystery and depth. Essentially they are Soliloquies; the intervals provide the feeling of space and aloneness. TRIO '79 The Trio's subtitles are intended more as an expression of mood rather than a description. 1. - Celebration: a strutting rhythm grows into a short dance, then becomes lyrical and fades. 2. - Supplication: Archaic and muted double stops of Violin and Cello unfold against an indifferent bell sound of the piano. 3. - Lamentation: An argument between Piano and Cello leads to a processional canon of pathetic expression. The end evokes again the detached mystery of a bell that fades into silence. 4. - Affirmation: After another argument, this time between Violin and Cello, the affirmation of life is expressed in a dance which becomes more and more abandoned. Rhythm versus chaos and movement versus stagnation are the basic elements of this music. In spite of the many changes in musical styles, human feelings and emotions have remained much the same, my music is born out of the attempt to communicate them. W.T.
