A.k.a. Wessel Johan Ilcken
First Dutch modern jazz drummer (Hilversum 1/12/1923 - Utrecht 13/7/1957). Played with various international names like Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Scott, Herbie Mann, Bob Cooper, Joe Carroll, and Bengt Hallberg, Lars Gullin while living in Sweden for a long time. Died July 13th, 1957 of a brain haemorrhage after a waterskiing accident. Married to Rita Reys 6 years after his death an important jazz-prize was named after him: de Wessel Ilcken Prijs.
