A.k.a. Lloyd Buford Threlkeld
Born: April 18, 1893, Eminence, Kentucky. Died: September 1, 1935, New York, NY. Threlkeld led a jug band, that was amongst the first of the genre to be recorded in 1924. His professional name, "Whistler", came from the nose whistle he played during live performances and on recordings. After moving to Louisville around 1915, he formed a string band and later added a jug player. He recorded for Gennett, Okeh and Victor between 1924-1931. One line-up of his jug band recorded for a Fox-Movietone newsreel in 1930, and this clip can be seen today on YouTube. Threlkeld moved to Harlem following accusations that he stole from a guest following a 1932 performance at a Louisville hotel. Although he didn't record after 1931, he continued to perform until his death from tuberculosis in 1935. He was buried in City Cemetery, the pauper's cemetery on Hart Island. Since his death, Threlkeld's music has been recorded by jug bands around the world, and in 2013, he was inducted into the Jug Band Hall of Fame.
