The Widnes Star Novelty Prize Jazz Band was formed by a group of around one hundred unemployed men from Widnes in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with the aim of brightening people's lives during the depression. The band became very well known in the local area and broadcast from the BBC Manchester studio in May 1932.
