Composer
Scottish fiddler and composer. ✰ December 27, 1748 ✞ May 29, 1833 William Marshall is still one of the most respected Scottish fiddlers and composers of all time, but he was never a professional musician, nor was music his sole sphere of interest. For about 62 years from the age of 12, Marshall was employed by the Duke of Gordon, becoming their butler, house steward and eventually the Duke's factor. In his spare time he studied mechanics, architecture, astronomy, clockmaking and land surveying, and had a good reputation in sports, athletics and dancing. It is for his musical skills, however, that Marshall is revered today. (from http://www.nigelgatherer.com/perf/fiddlers/wmmar.html)
