William Relton received his basic training at the Belle Vue Grammar School in Bradford . He became a flugel hornist at the age of 14 and became a cornettist with The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band 3 years later . This brass band became British Champion in 1946. In this orchestra he soon became a solo cornettist. During the Second World War he was a trumpet player at the regional chapel of the Royal Air Force at Weston-super-Mare . After the war he studied at the Saltley Teachers' College in Birmingham , but at the age of 20 he became 3rd trumpet player and solo cornet at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra .
