Dr. William S. Boyd (b. Sept 19, 1907 d. Sept. 16, 1997). Info from obituary: As a physician, the 1942 Medical College of Georgia graduate served as a surgeon in World War II and as the U.S. Public Health Service's chief adviser on malaria control. He subsequently played a critical role in founding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. After opening his practice in Augusta in 1947, specializing in obstetrics-gyniatrics, Dr. Boyd held numerous high-level positions at St. Joseph Hospital where he continued to have an impact in his own community and around the state. But his medical career is only half the story of this remarkable man. Dr. Boyd was also a lover of arts and culture -- and a gifted artist in his own right. His works were displayed in the Smithsonian Institution. He authored two books, "Familiar Classical Themes Arranged for the Church and Home Organs" and "Rewards of Creativity." He and his wife founded the Boyd Piano Competition to further the study of classical music for young people. The doctor also established Augusta College's Fine Arts Scholarship and donated pipe organs to the college and the Sacred Heart Cultural Center. In addition, Dr. Boyd served in numerous civic posts, including president of Friends of the Augusta Library and as a member of the Morris Museum of Art. He was also active on behalf of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection and served on the board of Christian City in Atlanta.
