Winter Orchestra was the idea of Thomas Tol. At the end of 1971, when he was in his early twenties and was already a member of the Dutch popgroup BZN from Volendam for a few years, he wrote these two instrumental songs, which were inspired on the music of Bach and Mozart. But the songs didn't fit BZN's profile at that time, because the band still played rock music in that era. It was still five years before they had their first number 1 hit Mon Amour. They decided to release the single under the name 'Winter Orchestra'. The rumour goes that it's some of the BZN members who actually recorded this single. At least Thomas and his brother Cees Tol, who was also a member of BZN. On 22 december 1971 the single was performed on Dutch television, in the NCRV program 'Eddy Ready Go'. In the show this single was 'playbacked' by some unknown young guys from Volendam, without mentioning BZN or Thomas Tol. After Thomas and Cees Tol both left BZN in 1988 they formed the duo Tol & Tol. On their 2001 album V they re-recorded the B-track Autumn. In March 2019 Thomas Tol played three concerts 'Thomas Tol in Concert' in his home town Volendam. On the setlist was also the track Autumn, played live for the first time in 48 years.
