für mechanische orgel
for mechanical organ
"grand jeu" is a collection of pieces that experiment with the limits of what can be done with organs: shifting stops, variable key pressure, manual glissandi, motor on/off, maximum speed of hands, strikes on the music desk and case, etc. the pieces thus neccessarily have a high degree of improvisation; following traditional notation techniques with a pragmatic attitude was not feasible. the music as it actually sounds is determined by the instrument (room).
a special feature of this recording is the close range at which the microphones are placed in front of the instruments, you hear the music from the position of the player: i.e. attack wind, finger movements on manual, stereo of the pipe arrangement (C row left, C sharp row right), etc.
