Teruyuki Noda was born on May 15th, 1940 in Mie Prefecture. He studied composition with Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Yuzuru Shimaoka, and Akio Yashiro; conducting with Akeo Watanabe; and piano with Kiyo Kawakami and Yoriko Kojima. He won the first prize of the Japan Music Competition in 1963. In 1967, he completed the master course of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. While there as a student, he made his debut with a commemorative work commissioned by the Ohara Museum, a commissioned work from the Japan Philharmonic Series (No. 17) and other compositions. In 1974 he organized the Group of Young Composers ("Shin-Shin-Kai") of which he was chairman for ten years. From 1986 to 2007 he was a professor at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and served as its vice-chancellor from 2002 to 2005. He has been awarded the Grand Prix of the Commemorative Festival of Music of the Metropolis of Tokyo, the Prix Italia of Radio Italy, the Otaka Prize, the Grand Prix of the Japan Art Festival, the Takei Prize and other honors. He has composed many works on commission, and several concerts dedicated exclusively to his works were held. Most of his works were recorded and published.
