Singer
A.k.a. Gilbert Francis Lani Damian Kauhi
Gilbert Kauhi was born on October 17, 1937 and initially became known as a singer who enjoyed adding humor to his routines. He embraced the nickname of Zulu (sometimes spelled as Zoulou) during high school, and he would use it professionally. Zulu is best known for his role as Kono Kalakaua in the original CBS series HAWAi'I FIVE-O, which he did for four years. After being let go from the show, he would continue to act in television shows and movies, and also do co-host work for telethons in Honolulu. He died in 2004 at the age of 66 to diabetes-related causes. His mother grew up in the Kalapana area and was given to her grandparents (Hawaiian tradition of hanai), so that she spoke only Hawaiian until she went to kindergarten. She served as a model of Hawaiian language at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Hawaiian language and culture program. She wrote "He Mo`olelo `O Kapa`ahu" about her childhood with Hawaiian as her portion, but also translations into English.
