Alexander Garetkin (b. 1937) is a Russian jazz drummer, known as one of the first professional jazz musicians in Moscow. Garetkin graduated from the M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov College of Music in 1958. During the 1960s, Garetkin participated in Moscow jazz festivals with such leading ensembles as Leonid Garin Quartet, Georgy Garanyan Sextet, Victor Prudovsky Trio, Boris Frumkin Quintet, and The Crescendo Quintet (also known as Alexei Zubov / Konstantin Bacholdin Quintet). In 1966, Goretkin played in Georgy Garanyan Quartet at the world-famous Jazz Jamboree Festival in Warsaw. From 1966 to 1973, Alexander was a drummer in Vadim Ludvikovsky Jazz Orchestra, and after that, he worked for many years in the Pop Symphony Orchestra of the All-Union Radio and Television. In the 1990s, Garanyan invited Goretkin to join one of his projects, thus re-introducing the veteran performer to the concert stage.
