ESSA is a ritual folk group from the Belarus, founded by Todar Kashkurevich - the famous ethnologist, researcher of folk culture and reviver of bagpipe traditions in Belarus and Lithuania. The repertoire of ESSA is the musical heritage of Northern Belarus (lands of Kryuja and Nalshia) and Eastern Lithuania (Dzukija and Aukshtaitija). The members of the band have mastered the authentic manner of performing folk compositions. They perceive their folklore music as a ritual, making it their religion. When playing live ESSA intuitively find new original ways of expression, performing folklore in a new way – in a form of modern mini-mysterries based on old traditions. The band had been formed in Minsk in 2003, the performers being professional artists, co-workers at the ethno cosmological centre "Kryuja".
