Privately released by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The esteemed audio- and radio art producer for WDR, Klaus Schöning, frequently commissioned or collaborated with John Cage during his lifetime. When the artist passed away in 1992 prior to witnessing the full realization of his large-scale composition for museum, Rolywholyover A Circus (1993), MoCA invited Schöning to create a tribute to Cage for The Territory of Art which he produced in 1994. "just to rolywholyover: john cage in memoriam" utilizes excerpts or out takes from their work together, and was completed at the Ton in Ton Studios in Düsseldorf, Germany. Sound engineers were Wolfgang Wessels and Thomas Müller with assistance from Nadja Schöning. Mastering engineer was Kris Solem. "Zangezi" was produced by The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MoCA) in 1985 as part of its award-winning public radio series, The Territory of Art. The series aired nationwide and internationally between 1984 and 1995. This radio production of Zangezi contains excerpts from the Russian Futurist play, Zangezi: A Supersaga in Twenty Planes (1985, Harvard University Press) by Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). It was directed by Peter Sellars and performed by actor David Warrilow. Conducted as a kind of short, spoken word opera for broadcast with sounds culled from satellites, an archive of bird songs mixed with human speech, Zangezi tells the mesmerizing story of a prophet who has visions of universal communication through numbers. The translation from Russian is by Paul Schmidt, used by permission of the Dia Art Foundation.
