Album 1971 on Top Hit Records label
R&B/Soul (Funk, Soul)
This is a unique stereo mastertape from the Ohio Players that has never been released before. Different mixes of these songs have previously been released as part of a reissue of the "Pain" LP, but mainly in mono. "Pain" was never released in stereo before. I acquired this tape from the same studio where this was recorded. They were cleaning out their tape archive and throwing away most of it. I saved this recording from being destroyed. The tape was mixed on May 12th 1971, by Bud Bilings, at Music City Recorders in Nashville. The studio later changed it's name to Studio19 and has relocated since the original building was torn down. More info about these recording sessions can be found on this blog : https://redkelly2.blogspot.com/2010/10/ohio-players-pain-top-hit-28047.html This tape contains 6 songs, 4 of which would end up on the Ohio Players' first 2 albums, while 2 other songs were released in the 90's and 00's on re-issues. All of them are mixed in full stereo, with a slightly different and drier mix with less reverb than the album versions, which makes them unique in itself. Drums are panned almost hard left on all songs, with keys/guitar mostly on the right. This gives plenty of options for people interested in sampling either clean drums or instruments from this tape. My guess is that these mixes were done right before the Ohio Players signed to Westbound, intended for a release on Top Hit Records (who were their label back then). Since Westbound decided to re-mix the songs, this got shelved and was probably forgotten about. I am selling this tape since I am selling my reel-to-reel deck and have no way of playing this back anymore. The tape is 1/4" Scotch 206 mastering tape, which was the go-to tape in the early to mid 70's in recording studios for mastering. The tape was recorded at 15 ips and is in pristine condition. I've only played it back twice since acquiring it in 2005 and it has always been stored in proper conditions, away from dust, humidity, cold and heat. Plays back perfectly fine on a Teac A3300S. Songs are separated by pieces of paper tape between every single song, which allows for quick visual reference when forwarding or rewinding the tape. The reel contains 2 separate 3-song sequences, which are not connected to each other. As I wanted to keep the tape completely original, I did not modify this by connecting part 1 to part 2.
