Scott Yanow's liner notes state that the first six tracks were previously unissued, though they may be identical performances to those on the Masters Jazz Recordings LP New Communications In Jazz (MJR 1001E). The last eight tracks appeared on the Montreux 1971 LP on the same label (MJR 8111). The booklet is self-titled The JPJ Quartet, while the jewel box spine reads The JPJ Quartet Featuring Bud Johnson, then the CD reads The JPJ Quartet 1969-71. I chose the latter option. Tracks 1-6 recorded approximately between 1969-1970. Tracks 7-14 recorded on June 20, 1971 at the International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.
