A.k.a. Woody Herman And The Fourth Herd

For the 1960's big band, please use Woody Herman And The Swingin' Herd In June 1955, Woody Herman And His Orchestra in the stage of Woody Herman And His Third Herd was disbanded due to a Las Vegas show for the last months of 1955. At the end of the show in November 1955, a new, smaller ensemble, Woody Herman And His Octet, doing recording sessions for Capitol, was the nucleus for a new big band. This band was later called Woody Herman And The Fourth Herd. For the first recordings in 1956, Capitol called this band 'The Swinging Herd', which was later determined to be 'The Fourth Herd'. The name 'The Swinging Herd' was later used for the 1960's successor Woody Herman And The Swingin' Herd. The early 'Swinging Herd'-stage ended with the recordings on May16th, 1956 in Chicago.
